Suitcases
Pullman style suitcases are the most convenient ones. And while there are many from which to choose, make sure that you get one with
a very wide wheelbase. You'll find that wide wheelbase invaluable over anything other than perfectly smooth surfaces. And even on smooth
surfaces, it might come in handy.
Pack the heaviest items at the bottom of your suitcase, but pack the things you might need right away in your on-board luggage or in
the easy to get at pockets of your big suitcase. I always pack umbrellas and a jacket where I can get to them easily.
Packing List
- Really comfortable walking shoes/hiking boots that you won't mind getting muddy or dirty
- As little luggage as possible
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Fanny pack with water bottle
- Small camera with loads of film
- A couple of good travel books
- A good map like Michelin 989 or 911. These are much better than the maps you get at the airports.
- Optional, but recommended: A good traveling companion.
- Camera
- Film
- Video camera
- Video tape
- Battery recharger
- Electric converters
- Ear plugs for plane travel
- Sleeping mask for using while traveling
- Night time cold medicine to knock yourself out on the plane
- Compass (this can be amazingly useful when you're lost at night driving on the highway)
- Zip-loc bags which come in handy for everything!
- Umbrella
- Under-garment passport pocket
- Credit cards: get local currency from the ATM wherever you land.
- Moist-towlettes. Eckerds sells about 20 per box. Or you might be able to get them from your local diner...
- Blue jeans
- Maybe a sketch pad and some watercolors or thick ink pens?
- Saline solution
- Aspirin
- Bottled water
- Snack (just in case you're grounded for a while before takeoff)
Advice
Always pack whatever you need, and then cut it in half.
